This children's home is more like a huge family, so join them for 3 months or more and take care of these precious babies & children

This particular family in South Africa rescued the tiniest victims of a society in turmoil. Since they rescued their first children in April 1993, they have continued to play a part in changing the destiny of more than 780 babies who have been abandoned or orphaned, as their nation continues to be plagued by HIV-AIDS, unemployment and high crime levels.

The primary ethos at this children's home is that "every child has the right to a loving and responsible family". Every baby is a part of their family, they hold each little one dear, they fight for the rights of every one, they seek the best for each individual, always. Being committed to this belief has meant that over time they have had to grow. Their family has grown from five children to almost thirty; Their nursery accommodates another thirty little babies between birth and three years; They are assisted by a fantastic international team of volunteer caregivers. They employ a number of staff members to assist with administrative and domestic duties. And they now report to a board, who assist them in ensuring they keep sailing in the right direction.

Their mission is to do the best they can for every single child to whom they commit themselves. Some of the little ones they commit to, have been labelled "beyond hope". Once a baby is admitted, they do everything that is within their reach. They also believe that where there is life there is hope, and often they have found that given something to hope for, miracles can, and do, happen. Where possible their aim is to restore a baby to his biological family. If they are unable to restore a baby to his biological family they seek a family who will adopt the child into their family. Occasionally, it happens that, a child does not find a family outside of the orphanage. These are often the children with health difficulties, however that doesn't make them any less special to them, and their commitment stands. These children remain with them and become full members of the family. Occasionally their role in these children's lives is little more than comforting and loving them in their final hours, and remembering them for the angels they are.

Their work is divided into three areas:
  • Babies: The first is their work with the babies, the little ones they bring into their home with the intention of either reuniting them with their biological family, or of finding a forever family who will be able to provide them with those essentials that everyone needs.
  • Children: The second area they spend a lot of time in is raising children, investing love and time into the lives of those children who have become permanent members of their family. They ensure that someday each of them will be able to become contributing members of the nation and the world.
  • Volunteers: Much of the work at this orphanage is done by young people from around the world. Many of these youths have never been away from home for an extended period of time. During the time that they provide them with an invaluable service in time and effort, the orphanage provides a safe environment in which they can experience a little of the real world.

Furthermore they are also involved in the following projects: The farm: This project aims to get them to be self sustainable and maybe even generate some income.

Community projects: The community they serve suffers from abject poverty, often leading to the abandonment of babies. By addressing this poverty, they can help reduce the number of babies who are abandoned.

    Accommodation & meals
The orphanage is situated in a semi - rural area on a plot. They have a fair number of farm animals such as pigs, sheep, chickens, cats, and dogs. Not to mention all the grass, dust and pollen. If you have any allergies they will flare up. They have 3 volunteer cottages. Each sleeps 8 people, 2 per room. Each cottage has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen and lounge. They do not offer accommodation for couples. Males & females are not allowed in each others rooms under any circumstances. There is a laundry room for the washing. Bedding is supplied, however towels are not.

Three meals a day are provided and these are served in the main house. Meat makes up a significant part of the South African diet and the orphanage is not able to accommodate vegetarian or specialised diets.

They also have a volunteer flat that houses 4 long term volunteers: 6 months - 1 year. This fully furnished garden flat is also situated on the premises of the Main House in Glenvista.

Meals are the responsibility of the volunteer and at own expense. The orphanage will help, when possible, to drive you to the grocery store but there are stores within walking distance of the baby house, and walking for groceries is expected most of the time.

    T
    Tasks
Duties will depend on the number of hands they have available at the time you will volunteer there. They will make sure that the most important duties are met which would mainly be in the nursery. Duties include stimulating the development of the babies (premature – 3 / 4 years of age); change, bath and feed them, love and cuddle them. They duties also include sanitization and cleaning of nursery rooms (bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, meds room, play areas); washing and sterilizing dishes, bottles, teats, dummies and cups etc. and doing laundry. If the volunteer numbers are high then duties will include helping out on the farm with the animals / garden chores; helping out in the main house and main kitchen with cleaning, cooking etc.

As a volunteer you would be assigned to various nursery duties on a daily schedule. You will work 6 days a week and would be required to work approximately 10 hours a day. There is a mandatory meeting held once a week where volunteers and management discuss matters relating to the nursery, children and life at the orphanage. Every 3-4 weeks you may need to work one week of nightshift.
