This is an independent human rights organisation with a 38-year track record of human rights activism and public interest litigation in South Africa. The law is used as a positive instrument for change and to deepen the democratisation of South African society. To this end, it provides free legal services to vulnerable, marginalised and indigent individuals and communities, both non-national and South African, who are victims of unlawful infringements of their constitutional rights.

INTERNSHIP

As an intern you will learn and contribute greatly to assist asylum seekers and refugees with their legal challenges and work with and support clients on a case by case basis.

You will spend the first three days of the week engaging with clients in interviews (after an initial training and shadowing period) and training takes places on most Fridays. As with everything in life, the more committed you are to the work, the more you will benefit from your contribution is terms of knowledge and the acquisition of skills.

After initial training, you will perform the following duties:

• interviewing clients to assess issues and needs
• opening files on electronic system and with hard copies
• attending to the relevant issues including legal research
• correspondences with eg government departments
• drafting legal arguments for the Refugee Appeal and the Standing Committee for Refugee Affairs on behalf of clients
• assisting with judicial reviews to the High Court
• administrative management of files

Please note that all cases are undertaken under supervision of an attorney.

REQUIREMENTS

• Current student of a legal degree or graduated student
• Ability to speak and write in English fluently and idiomatically
• Experience in a law firm, or in-house experience in a media/technology company
• Well organized with the ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously under deadline pressure
• Demonstrated legal analysis and research skills
